For several years, officers from Park City, Brigham City, and other localities have taken young children Christmas shopping. These children from low-income families have fewer opportunities to buy gifts for themselves and other family members.
Hundreds of law enforcement officers participate in the annual event, in which each child is given $100 to spend on presents. Of course, sometimes the kids’ desires exceed this amount, and their police partners generally make up the difference. Popular gift items include coats, shoes, books, and dolls.
In addition to helping the kids have a brighter Christmastime, the event helps the police build positive relationships with young people. One detective explained that the police also enjoy the departure from the routine.
